Inspiration

The goal for this project was to design a chair that had a similar silhouette and vibe to my inspiration. I wanted to design a chair that had a soft round organic shape with contrasting materials of soft and hard. I looked at some furniture whose shape was a bit more experimental and non conventional. I wanted it to almost look like an art piece. The environment for the chair would be in a high end minimal home that is styled with abstract furniture.

Trecle Chair

Ideation 1

For the first series of ideations I came up with a variety of unique shapes and different ways one would sit in the chair. I experimented with sound shapes and tried to keep the number of parts to a minimum of 3-5. I kept in mind how I would use contrasting materials such as wood and upholstery.

Mock up 1

Once I narrowed down and chose some designs I made mock ups of how the furniture would be assembled and to see how the proportions look like. I used foam core, hot glue, pipe cleaners and tape.

This was the first iteration of the chair that I came up with. After relating it back to my initial mood/ inspiration board I realized that it wasn’t working out. It just didn’t fit. It was too complex and lacked the subtle flow of the other furniture. So I went back to the ideating.

Ideation 2

For the second ideation phase I narrowed my choice down to one design. I then drew up some variations of it focusing on materials and keeping in mind the other considerations I had from my inspiration board.

Mock Up 2

Once I finalized what the design would look like I made one more mock up to get a feel of what it would look like built.

Once I went with this design I realized that I did not really like having the black support rods placed upright in that form. It didn’t flow together and looked rather stuck on. So I went back to my ideation sketches and chose another one.

I ended up going with this design instead. I felt it flowed a lot better and the proportions made more sense. It felt more complete, balanced and interesting. I added some details to the connection points of the rods and the backrest to give it more cohesiveness.

Imminer Side Table

Ideation

When coming up with designs for the side table I wanted to take elements from the chair. I made the table top take the shape of he seat from the chair and i wanted the legs and frame to take shape of the backrest and circle around the shape of the table as well as being thinner like the connect rods on the chair.

Mock Up

Once I chose a design I made a mock up out of foamcore and pipe cleaners to figure out how to assemble it.

Once I modeled it out and rendered it I came to the conclusion that it was too similar to the chair. It lacked the inspiration and was more of just a copy of the form into a table. I needed to make it more interesting and accent the chair.

After that I modeled out some more side tables and stayed away from copying the exact shape of the chair. I instead chose shaped that were inspired by the chair and complimented it as a side piece.

I ended up going with this design. I felt it capture the flow of the chair and complimented not only the chair but also how the user would sit in it and use the table.
